Different sports and different governing bodies rank differently, so the formula is configuration, not code. Whatever formula a competition uses, it is published next to the table.

How this ranking is calculated

Configurable

The Basketball table uses the formula below. A different federation running on the same platform can define its own without any code change (§38).

rating = 1200
       + points        * 24
       + difference    * 3
       + strength_of_schedule * 1.5
       - inactivity_decay

# points: 2 per win, 0 per loss
# difference: points for minus points against
# decay applies after 90 days with no published result

Public data transparency. Anyone should be able to see who played, who scored, when it happened, who officiated and how the table was derived. Opaque standings are a bug (§98).
